Home of

Southern Maryland District Commander

Bob Ouellette Sr.

Welcome,

I would like to thank each of you who have taken the opportunity to renew your membership.

As of today we have 258 paid members. Our goal is 346. Some of you may remember that in 2001, Post 295 had only 27 members. Every year more veterans join the American Legion, for our Post that  reflects a 1218% increase in membership. Like every Legion Post, not all of the new members that we recruit, renew their membership.

I don’t have an answer why a majority of these members did not renew. If the Legion is not meeting the needs of our members then we need to find out what is needed.  Congratulations to all the members who reached membership milestones of 5 years or more, a certificate is awarded at every 5 year increment, see who has received theirs. Also a big welcome to our new members, we hope to see you in that list soon.

When we joined the Legion, you did not just a card and magazine. You became part of the world’s largest veteran’s organization that serves the community, state and nation. The youth in the community benefit from scout sponsorship, school awards, Boys/Girls State programs and scholarships.

As the number of Legionnaires grow so does the voice of veterans nationwide. Congress cannot ignore 2.6 million veterans. With millions of veterans behind the National Commander, President Obama dropped plans to extend co-payments at the VA facilities. Presidents regularly visit the American Legion National Convention to show their gratitude for our service. With a strong AL there should be no need to repeat the “Bonus Army” that occupied Washington in 1932.

As Legionnaires everyone receives quite a few benefits ranging from representation for VA Claims, financial assistance in disasters and a wide range of discounts. Many of these discounts are for Legionnaires only and a surprising number have no idea that they could save hundreds of dollars on everything from microwaves and dishwashers. I personally saved $200 on a new dishwasher through Sears Commercial Sales. You cannot get this discount in stores.

PROGRAMS

The American Legion, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Post 295 has been serving the greater Gaithersburg-Germantown area since April 15th, 1983.

The Post received its permanent Charter on December 7th, 1983. Post 295 is a 501(c)19, Veterans Service Organization, incorporated in Maryland.

Post 295 is homeless, which means we do not have a Post Home* of our own. However, Post 295 has been successfully carrying out the programs of the American Legion since 1983 without a Post Home.

*Post 295 would gladly accept donations of property for the purpose of founding a Post Home.

Announcing a PTSD SUPPORT GROUP

sponsored by POST 295

Because not all wounds are visible...

a support group for parents, spouses, brothers, sisters and concerned friends who care for a veteran or serviceman who is dealing with PTSD or the stress of deployment.

A group to find out what and what you shouldn't do and to realize that you are not the only one dealing with issues.

Make a tax deductible donation to support OPC II

Post 295 is in the process putting together a support group for Veterans and their families. The group will focus on helping them find assistance if needed as well as providing emotional support as best we can.

Families are one of the areas of emphasis with this effort. Many times we think they will come home and be the same. Unfortunately, everyone come homes changed in some way. These groups are meant to assist family members, parents, brothers, sisters, in-laws and friends who are having a difficult time coping with someone that they care for who is dealing with PTSD.

Post 295 manager leaves for Rockville

Price guided Gaithersburg since 1984; won three state crowns, 11 division titles

by James Peters, Staff Writer www.gazette.net

After helping to start and guide the Gaithersburg Post 295 American Legion baseball team since the program's inception in 1984, Rick Price, the owner of three Maryland State American Legion titles, has decided to hand the team over to junior legion coach Steve Cononie.

OPERATION PROVIDE COMFORT

Originally founded to support wounded warriors at Bethesda Naval Hospital, OPC has shifted focus to provided support and information for those who have loved oned who may be exhibiting signs of stress or PTSD.

Founded in January 2003, Legionnaires from the Vietnam Veterans Memorial American Legion Post 295 in Gaithersburg, MD have been assisted wounded and sick military members with personal care needs while they are undergoing rehabilitation at the area’s military hospitals.

There are several corporate organizations providing the support we once did. We now feel our efforts to assist our fellow servicemen and veterans is to support those who do not have access to military health care. If we can make 1 life better, then everyone wins.

Since 2003, Post 295 provided more than $10,000 in support to our wounded warriors. However, we are in desperate need of funding. If you can donate even $5, you will help make a difference.

This Edmund Ault design has been the best kept secret in Montgomery County golf since 1968. The 6,700 yard par 71 course offers both changeling holes and a fair share of opportunities to score well. MVGC has gone through some changes in the past years, switching to a new bermuda-hybrid grass and creating some new tee boxes, while the fast and smooth greens have remained the staple of the course. In the past years MVGC has hosted several PGA sanctioned events such as the Maryland Open Qualifier, Mary-land amateur Qualifier, MAPGA Pro-am, and MAPGA Titleist tour events
